Japan Hokkaido - 19 May 2015 (Day 3)

Had quite the headache trying to decide if I should buy the Hokkaido Rail Pass, or not. Some calculation was definitely required. An ordinary pass costs about SGD261 for 5 days, inclusive of Fedex delivery service. It might be worthwhile if I'm using it to travel to Asahikawa and Hakodate. But looking at the schedule and since Asahiyama Zoo doesn't operate in May as well, decided to just do Hakodate. Travelling time to Hakodate is at least 3 hours and 20 minutes via rapid trains.

Reservation was fairly easy via this site before the travel dates. Easy to use, and there's some small discounts to the tickets. Chose the ordinary car and reserved a seat. Paid ¥14,810 for the tickets. That's about SGD$162.

ready for Hakodate

Taking the 8:34 morning train, so had a small breakfast of convenience store bought soft cake and coffee in the hotel before walking to the train station. There was a slight drizzly that morning.

Arrived at the station around 8:15am, and there were some people queueing up for their train. There's also a tiny stall that sells ramen at the platform where you eat while standing. Plenty of vending machines for drinks too.

train to Hakodate

Hokuto train to Hakodate had arrived!

Reserved seats are usually at carriage number 4. The Hokuto 6 train arrived at 8:21am and it moves off at exactly 8:34am. So, don't be late!

nice comfy seat

Train was clean and comfortable. As I was only doing an overnight stay at Hakodate, didn't have to bring much so was travelling with just a backpack.

some things to read, and my lemon tea drink from vending machine

As usual, ticket master will come around to check the tickets. Soon after that, the trolley service will begin. Here's the link to the Hokuto train menu. Looks interesting, so got myself an osusume bento for ¥980 (SGD12).

spring has arrived!

Loved the colourful bento. Lots of carbs though. 5 pieces of items with rice, some pickles, the deep fried stuff are forgetable and limp. Best item was the fishcake. The braised chicken and vege was quite nice too. There's a wrapped up sweet mochi in the bento too, for desserts.

Noboribetsu Station - for onsen goers

It was raining outside as the train moves along. Kinda happy to see coastal area.

The train was not too cold though it was raining outside. Was bored, so bought a cup of coffee to while the time away. Coffee is expensive at ¥300 (if I remembered correctly). Beer is about the same price. Yes, alcohol is also sold in the train.

JR train coffee

Didn't see a trash bin in the train (actually it's at the in-between of the carriage) so I ended up carrying the bento box, and coffee cup down the train with me. Others bought their own plastic to throw stuffs. Ok, I learn.

Arrived in Hakodate after 3 hours plus, and boy, it was cold! First stop, to the 函館朝市 or Hakodate Asaichi (Morning Market). いきます!

Japan Hokkaido - 18 May 2015 (Day 2)

Mornings are usually spent on charging of devices, a cup of coffee and a hot water shower. Day 2 was planned to be free and easy, and to explore the sights of Sapporo and its nearby touristy spots. Walking half-day tour, if you may. The target was to do at least 10,000 steps per day.

The weather was good. Bright and sunny, with a nice blue sky. Headed towards Sapporo station underground and just followed the signs. Surface up to view the interesting buildings.

It was lunch time, and was thinking of what to eat. Just continued walking and ended up at the TV Tower.

TV Tower
There's a beer garden there with nice aroma from the sizzling pan. Took some pictures and wondered if I should go up the tower. There's a western restaurant at the TV Tower and the lunch set was quite tempting. There's also a souvenir shop, so convenient.

Tawakkie or also known as Terebi-Tōsan てれびとさ - mascot of TV Tower

Walked the around the area and found a stall that sells corn. Since most travel blogs say that corn is one of the must-eats, so I got one roasted corn. The lady was asking me something but I couldn't understand. Ended up with shoyu corn. She was probably asking me the flavour that I wanted? Either way, managed to get one hot piping corn. She even stuck a toothpick onto the plastic bag, and gestured that it is to clean the teeth after eating. =)

Was hungry, so sat down at one of the benches at the park nearby. The corn was sweet, and nice but a tad softer than I imagined.

After that, headed to Odori Park and there were more stalls selling corn and ice-cream.

Odori Park and TV Tower

Quite a number of people at the park, just sitting around and enjoying the weather. Lots of elderly folks too. I sat along with them, and watched. There was a film crew walking around, probably looking for people to interview.

After spending some time up in the surface and absorbed enough sunshine, headed back down to the underground.

Passed by some amazing looking shops such as Ishiya Cafe, Sapporo Sweets, Ginza Lion Beer Hall but decided not to dine there. -_-''' Kinda regretted it, on hindsight. Could've just ordered steak and beer!

Explored Pole Town and Aurora, and somehow ended up in Susukino. Great! Now I can look for my Ebiten Bunten and Ramen Alley.

Didn't check beforehand, the location of those two places but knew it should be nearby Susukino Station.

Unfortunately, took me quite a while to look for Ramen Alley. Or wait, was it the Ramen Alley? It was kind of small, but it did have a few ramen shops with signs outside its shop stating which TV station had visited before. The time then was 2.30pm and I guessed it was way passed lunch time. No other customers except one shop with a lone diner. Hmm, decided against it as the weather was hot and not in the mood for ramen.

Walked somemore and finally found Ebiten but it was having its mid-day break. Ok, ended up at Sushizanmai instead. It was rather late by then. Read about the experience here.

After that, to Tanukikoji Shopping Alley also known as 狸小路. A straight line of shops and eateries.

There's also a place that sells owl taiyaki and one could sit in-front of that shop to view some owls perched indoors. Cute.

Went into one shop that sells groceries and bought some stuffs. There's also drugstores in Tanukikoji, so went in to grab some facial cleansers and moisturizers. Definitely cheaper here than back home.

At one end, there's Nijo Market nearby. It was already late so most shops in Nijo had closed for the day.

Ended up without lunching, and headed back to the hotel with tired feet. Walked more than 20,000 steps that day. Probably 5000 steps was due to being lost somewhere at some point in time.

Dinner was packed food from the department hall.

Japan Hokkaido - 17 May 2015 (Day 1)

Managed to navigate safely to Sapporo Station via the JR Rapid Airport train that took only 37 minutes with base fare of ¥1070. I'd recommend to top up ¥310 for reserved seat.

New Century Royal Hotel is located near Daimaru and Apia. For first timer, it's probably easier to navigate from the outside than trying to find the underground link. Either way, one will still need to carry the luggages over some steps. The hotel lobby for New Century Royal is at Level 2 and there's a Family Mart convenience store at Level 1. Plenty of restaurants too.

Check-in time is 2pm so left the luggage with the hotel and walked over to ESTA 札幌 エスタ JRタワー  for lunch. ESTA is about 6 minutes walk from the hotel. The 10th floor of ESTA is where plenty of restaurants are located, inclusive of Sapporo Ramen Kyowakoku 札幌ら~めん共和国 where 8 of Hokkaido's most famous ramen shops are congregated here, representing the areas of Sapporo, Asahikawa, Hakodate, and Kushiro.

For me, lunch mission was to sample Sapporo's soup curry and conveniently, there's a Soup Curry Lavi at ESTA. Check out the soup curry experience from here.

The Chuo-bus Sightseeing Counter is located at Level 2 of ESTA. It was easier to find from the outside as compared to searching for it from the underground level. The counter closes by 6pm so be there early to get the reserved tour tickets.

ticket for Mt Moiwa and Mt Okura Night Tour with Dinner @ ¥5000

The instructions were pretty simple: Wait nearby the sightseeing ticket counter 10 minutes before departure time.

Went back to the hotel to rest as there was about two hours to spare prior to the tour departure time. Though it was an economy single room, I think they acceeded to my request of having a larger bed. Located at the 10th floor, the room was larger than expected.

amenities
bathroom with bathtub
shampoo for body and hair, conditioner
face and hand soap, comb, and other things
view from the room
hot water kettle and one complimentary drinking water (UCC coffee bought from convenience store)

The hotel provided free wifi access, and reception in the room was generally good. There's also a LAN cable in the room.

Soon, it was time for the night tour so back to the sightseeing counter. Indeed, at the appointed time of 6pm, the tour guide will appear to gather the participants. Oh, the Chuo-bus tour is conducted in Japanese only. すみません、わかりませんです。。。 became my favourite phrase. Turned out that there was another non-native in the tour, so ended up being paired together. For the rest of the night, Daisy from Taiwan became my best friend.

It was sunset as we were making our ascent to Mount Moiwa. Quite romantic actually, if not for a carriage full of others.

Very soon, we came to a stop and then took the Morris-car up for a short while.

Moiwa-yama is 531 metre high, so it was pretty cold at the peak especially with the wind blowing. It wasn't nightfall yet, so the view was not as spectacular.

Only have about ten minutes to spend at the top, and then it was another 10 minutes at the souvenir shop.

The view during the ride back via the ropeway was prettier as the sky had turned dark, and the city lights went up.

After which, we were then whisked away via the bus to Mount Okura for dinner of jingisukan, another of Hokkaido's specialty.
